Today, the primary care physician is poorly equipped to treat a large volume of patients who are diverse in age, acuity and payer arrangement. In a typical primary practice, the physician sees everyone from a 22-year-old college student who needs a physical, to a 35-year-old mother with a cold, to a 75-year-old man suffering from hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, kidney disease and a recent stroke. Clearly, each of these patients has different needs, expectations and abilities to care for themselves.
At ChenMed, we have transformed our approach. Our full risk model focuses on the most vulnerable population – seniors with complex chronic conditions.

Our Growth
We’re a family-owned, physician-led practice of primary and multi-specialty care experts. We originated in Miami, Florida over 25 years ago. Our innovative culture and unique business philosophy are currently driving exponential, organic growth nationally. Currently, we operate 13 medical centers across the southeast with 2012 expansion plans underway. When we build, the patients see the value proposition and join our practice model.

Chen Family Story
A patient’s life changes the instant he or she receives an adverse diagnosis. Suddenly, fear and confusion interrupt their wellbeing, leaving them vulnerable to a complicated, and largely unsympathetic health care system. When the patient is also a physician, the experience is often the same.
Almost eight years ago, Chen Medical founder, Dr. Jenling James Chen, was diagnosed with cancer and given two months to live. His experience navigating the unchartered waters of the current health care system with many complex health issues put his entire family on the receiving end of patient care – fighting for access to it, and fighting for his life.
Happily, Dr. Chen is now fully recovered. But his struggle to access quality, empathetic and well-coordinated care fueled a relentless determination to turn the current health care delivery system on its head and create the ChenMed model as it stands today – an accountable and compassionate physician-led culture that:
- Brings together primary and multi-specialty care experts with ancillary medical services, including dental, pharmacy and acupuncture under one roof. By maximizing doctors and services in “one shop,” we can deliver coordinated and collaborative health care that enhances quality outcomes, efficiency, and the patient experience.
- Values a positive and welcoming approach to patient care, particularly for underserved seniors with low to moderate incomes. Due to his life-changing cancer diagnosis, our founder, Dr. Chen, experienced the “opposite side of the glass” and understands first-hand how vulnerable and uncertain patients can feel during their greatest time of need.
- Advocates wellness for patients along the health continuum, from intensive, preventive care to treating multiple, complex, chronic illnesses. We invest in our patients by implementing strategies that help prevent complications from chronic complex medical problems.
- Takes ownership of patient outcomes. Our doctors meet three times a week to present their patients to the entire group. We ask the question “how can hospitalizations be prevented” or “how could we improve outcomes” on a patient by patient basis. This approach enhances accountability and collaboration as well as fosters ongoing innovation.
- Develops and utilizes customized, end-to-end technology designed to support every aspect of the ChenMed model and culture. This technology also enhances performance in practices that share a similar culture, health care philosophy, and patient mix.
